Why Stop C-section?

My experiences with C-section are both personal and professional.

After my first natural home birth I found myself isolated in my journey, and in my victory because my peers and the older women around me had nothing but unexpected traumatic c-section births to share.

The problem of C section became extremely personal when I was faced with the possibility of C Section 37 weeks into my 4th pregnancy.

As a doula, I helped women achieve VBACS but I didn’t understand the magnitude of what I helped them accomplish until I witnessed a C Section firsthand.

In addition to sharing how I turned my breech baby to avoid a C-Section birth myself, this course takes everything I learned from my experiences as a doula supporting women in Phoenix-area hospitals and helps you to answer the following questions:

  1.  What should I think about when I’m considering being induced or using drugs for my labor?
  2. What types of C-Sections exist?
  3. What steps can I take to avoid a c-section during labor?
  4. Is it really that big of a deal to have a C-Section instead of a vaginal birth?
  5. And most of all....How do I labor and birth the way that I want?

To this day, I still get questions in my inbox about avoiding C-Sections during labor--from women AND their doulas, and in a poll I conducted, 77% of the women participating wanted to know:

"How Can I Avoid An Unwanted C-Section During Labor?”

This course is my response.

Hi, I'm Shayla; a doula certified through Shafia Monroe Consulting and trained through the Health Connect One Community-Based Doula model.

I have given birth naturally 6 times:

-once in a hospital

-twice at home with midwives and doulas

-three times with only the assistance of my husband

As a Doula in the Phoenix Metro I primarily supported women in hospital settings. During this time, my support consisted mostly of helping women navigate the hospital system and avoid unnecessary and dangerous interventions.

Additionally, I’m the creator and curator of Black Birth Story Blog, “where black women are the authority on black maternal health” and the Listening to Black Women YouTube Series.

"I enjoyed my experience with Genesis Birthing and Living and with Shayla as my doula. She helped solidify my confidence for the natural labor I wanted and instilled in me that 'labor is not a medical emergency'. I took her words into labor with me and gave birth in the hospital to my first son naturally."

"My husband and I really enjoyed having Shayla as our Doula. I was induced and labor was rough! However, Shayla's vigilance over us and her advocacy for us in the hospital helped us to bring our 1st baby girl into the world vaginally and without incident. We absolutely could not have done it without her."
